CREDENTIALS:

The YiYO® games evolved from the Metabolic Symphony® project under supervision of the Endocrinology and Diabetes Service at Perth Children’s Hospital in Western Australia.

The games have been developed in collaboration with a variety of health and education professionals including credentialed dietitians and diabetes educators, endocrinologists, teachers/principals, curriculum designers, fitness professionals, researchers and scientists.

YiYO® has been trialled successfully at a variety of primary and secondary schools, including remote and metropolitan Aboriginal schools. The games have been integrated into the literacy, numeracy and health education curriculum.

Health professionals have found the games useful in identifying the dietary habits of their patients and for providing practical lifestyle coaching.

The standardized energy and nutritional data has been provided for game play purposes only. Players are advised not to use the data for health or medical advice and to consult a qualified health professional to determine their individual dietary or fitness requirements.

REFERENCES:

The nutritional and energy data on the YiYO® cards has been verified across a variety of professional online databases and supermarket surveys.

The Australian National Health & Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand and Australian Dietary Guidelines (2013) are the principal references for the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and Estimated Energy Requirement (EER) data and the general nutritional information contained in the Metabolic Symphony® Program.

Standardised heights and weights for children and adolescents (8 - 17 years) are based on the median values for each age referenced from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Growth Charts (2000).

Using the average heights of Australian men and women as a base, the Hamwi Formula (1964) has been used to determine a standardised reference weight where BMI falls within the healthy range for adults (18.5 - 24.9).

The Schofield equation has been used to calculate BMR. EER values are based on a Personal Activity Level (PAL) of 1.4.

The energy output values on the YiYO® activity cards have been verified across a variety of energy usage calculators.
